Ethics in the Aviation Profession
Ethics in the Aviation Profession

Ethics is a branch of study that deals with moral principles where these moral principles govern a person's behavior (MacKinnon & Fiala, 2014). This ethical definition in relation to the aviation industry should not change. In fact, in the aviation industry, ethics should be taken with greater seriousness as the industry is widely used on a global scale. Ethical behavior is essential for anyone working in the field from pilots to aircraft technicians and manufacturers. Each decision made has to be done with ethical considerations in mind. In any phase of life, we as humans are bound to find ourselves having to make ethical decisions. Usually, it becomes a dilemma when the non-ethical decision would satisfy the individual's direct needs while the ethical choice would be the more inconvenient one. Such decisions are not taught professionally as such problem-solving methods are non-cognitive and cannot be easily be resolved using theories. However, in the aviation industry, we are always taught to make the ethical decision, no matter how it inconveniences us. It had been repeated endlessly when we study aviation and learn about human factors. An unethical decision may lead to a chain reaction that can result in a bigger loss for both the individual and the company. Therefore, when pursuing a professional aviation career, it is crucial to keep in mind the consequences of your actions and that ethical choices, though difficult to make, will provide a better overall result.

Good afternoon,
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with when it comes to the aviation industry and the principles of ethics remaining unchanged. I wish in my blog I had referenced the snowball effect that you did. Too many times in the military, through friends of mine that are maintainers, I have heard of the terrifying incidents that all started from lack of attention. Like you I do think that ethics definitely falls in line with integrity and making the right decisions and voicing bad practices even when it is not the most popular action to take. In the long run speaking up will save so many lives and potentially so much money in the industry. One of the biggest things to keep in mind is the human aspect of some of the jobs in the industry like maintenance and avionics. In order to keep ethical standards in check they have applied and inspection system where some one else inspects the maintenance done on an aircraft in order to have a fresh set of eyes and potentially catch any mistakes which definitely make me feel better about the aircraft I ride for sure.
SH,
ReplyDeleteNice blog entry, I enjoyed reading. I like how you brought up that the Ethical action to take in a given situation can a lot of the times be the more difficult or inconvenient thing to do. Another thing to keep in mind when faced with an ethical decision is what will be the most ethical choice to make concerning all parties involved. Making ethically challenging decisions can be conflicting and It can be easy to overlook certain aspects. It can also be tempting to cut corners or turn a blind eye to things to avoid the difficulties that come with making the morally just decision. Thanks for sharing.
